Assistant Fire Chief

Chief Jerry D. Smith was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief in March of 2007. He has served the citizens of DeSoto as a paid member of the department since September 18, 1989. He worked his way through the ranks as a Firefighter/Paramedic and Engineer and was promoted to Captain in 2005. Prior to being appointed to Assistant Fire Chief in DeSoto, he had also worked part time with the Ovilla Fire Department for the past ten years.

Chief Smith attended fire recruit school in DeSoto graduating valedictorian of his class. He holds certifications in the disciplines of Master Firefighter, Driver/Operator-Pumper and Intermediate Instructor. Chief Smith went to Eastfield College and got his Associate Degree, he has also attended El Centro and Navarro colleges where he studied under their fire programs.

Prior to promoting to Assistant Fire Chief he served on the board for the DeSoto Fire Training Center and headed the videography department.

Chief Smith has been married to his wife Becky since 1996 and they live in Red Oak. He enjoys playing basketball with his daughter Kaytlin, hunting, fishing and camping.
